Consent of the Governed
Politics
A government's authority is said to rest on the agreement of those it rules, even though no one alive actually signed anything.
Source: After John Locke
Raises the puzzle of what counts as consent for people born into a state they never chose to join.
Godel's Incompleteness Theorems
Mathematics
Any consistent formal system strong enough for arithmetic contains true statements it cannot prove, and cannot prove its own consistency.
Source: After Kurt Godel, 1931
This limits what any fixed set of axioms can settle; it says nothing about whether truth itself is unreachable by other means.
Entropy's Arrow
Physics
The microscopic laws of physics run the same forward or backward in time, yet entropy only increases, giving time a direction at large scales.
Source: After Boltzmann's statistical mechanics
The arrow of time is statistical, not built into the fundamental equations of motion themselves.
Priming Failed to Replicate
Psychology
Reading words about old age was reported to make people walk out of the lab more slowly; a larger direct replication found no such effect.
Source: After John Bargh; failed to replicate in Doyen et al., 2012
The original study had 30 participants; the replication ran hundreds and controlled for experimenters who knew the hypothesis.
Blank Slate Mind
Philosophy
The mind at birth is a blank page; every idea it later holds is written on it by experience alone.
Source: After Locke, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding
If Locke is right, there is no innate human nature underneath, only what experience writes in.
Genetic Drift
Biology
In small populations, allele frequencies shift by chance alone, sometimes fixing a gene version that natural selection would never have favored.
Source: Names a concept in population genetics
Explains why small, isolated populations can end up genetically distinct even without any selective advantage.
